The Legacy

Season III is marked by a landmark event, which forces the four siblings to consider what they want with their lives, and whether they want to do good for the world and for their community. In this season, Signe has big visions and plans to expand her farm with a neighbouring farmer. Emil has moved into Grønnegaard where he among other things takes care of Melody (the daughter of Thomas and Isa). Gro challenges the Art Center's conventional thinking and discovers new sides of herself. Frederik is a success abroad and is hardly ever home, until he has to dive into a complicated investigation filled with emotions.

At Grønnegaard, Emil does his best to prepare for Melody's birthday as Hannah's disappearance forces him to reconsider his loyalties. Frederik now suffers the consequences of his absence. His visit doesn't leave him much time to prove his worth or to regain the trust of his family. Signe still has a lot to learn about farming, but the quirky, biodynamic farmer Karin helps her make her ideas come to life. Gro is advocating on behalf of the youngsters with the board of the Art Hall, which is threatening to cancel its cooperation following the vernissage. But young people have different ways of doing things, so does Gro even know how to defend them?

The four heirs don't get much space to process their grief. Gro feels unfit for the role as patron for the youngsters and is at her wits end when they come to her for advice in the battle against the mining corporation Argus. Frederik looks for clues to Hannah's whereabouts in her belongings. Grief-stricken, he blames the youths – demanding that they move out of Grønnegaard. Signe has to stay strong in her battle against Jensen, even as events in the family demand her focus. Emil tries to make peace amid the turmoil, but it is no easy task as he continues to struggle with his own conscience regarding Frederik. Should he keep up the lie?

At Grønnegaard, Signe's battle against Jensen seems never-ending but, backed by Karin, she proceeds with her plans, undeterred, and reaches an important milestone for her organic farm. Gro makes a major career decision, which Kim most certainly does not approve of, and soon she realises that the consequences reach further than herself. Emil does his best to maintain stability for Melody amid the conflicting agendas of the others, and he lends Frederik a helping hand in his business. Frederik is determined to go to court on behalf of the youngsters, and just as the case appears to be lost, help arrives from an unexpected source. But are there limits to the lengths he is willing to go to in order to win?

Gro has left Grønnegaard, with Robert and Melody, seeking to process her grief and focus on her little family. The solitude gives them food for thought, and Robert speaks his mind about Gro's future. Frederik's and Pitu's work pays off, but they are operating on the edge of the law, and must be careful not to get caught. Emil, having a hard time dealing with Melody's absence, chooses to focus on Frederik's wellbeing. But the intense scrutiny isn't exactly beneficial to Frederik's endeavours, and soon more truths are revealed than he would have wished. Signe's farming takes off, but the more she partners with Karin, the more she is confronted with their different ways of living. Signe's determination to help her family is generous, but is it also helpful to her farming?

Emil and Gro disagree on how to bring up Melody. Gro needs more time with Melody and Robert. She urges Emil to think more about himself and sends him back to Grønnegaard on his own. Signe makes her peace with Karin, but she soon has other worries as Aksel gets an offer that affects their plans for the future. Without Pitu to help him, Frederik is forced to put the case against Argus on hold. Instead, missing Hannah and needing a distraction, he throws himself into another mission to help Pitu and the youngsters. Emil is reconciled with Frederik. Plagued by guilt, he backs Frederik's collaboration with the youngsters. However, they are both soon surprised by the youngsters' plans – and is Emil prepared to sacrifice himself for his brother?

At Grønnegaard, Frederik is intensely preoccupied with defending the family against all accusations following the youngsters' latest stunt, as well as with defending Malik, who is charged with assault. Emil continues to be plagued by guilt at Malik's predicament, so Frederik persuades him to go away for a while. But Emil misses Melody so much that going away isn't easy. In her grief, Gro has found inspiration for a personal project and so she returns home to bring it to life. She is determined to take care of Melody's everyday life, but having to look after a child challenges her artistic ambitions. After the water event, Signe's vision of a new future faces dire opposition. The locals are furious – so is Signe prepared for the massive adversity that now knocks on her door?

The confrontation with Karin and the locals is wearing Signe down. She keeps her spirits up and tries to make peace, but when the threats really get personal, she reaches her limit. Frederik has turned all his attention to Villads and he must focus in order not to lose his son. Back at Grønnegaard, Emil must once again sacrifice his own concerns in the interest of the family, as he assumes responsibility for uniting the family to help Signe. Meanwhile, Emil tries to rebuild a stable everyday life for Melody, but Gro has a different view of what constitutes proper upbringing and the two are forced to make a serious effort to find common ground. Gro is busy with her work of art, which helps her process her loss. But has she thought about how it will affect the others?

Grønnegaard is abuzz following the leak of the city council’s plan for the local waterworks. Frederik’s legal skills are in high demand by the locals and Pitu needs him – but the family demands his full attention. Gro is busy with her work of art, but the piece is not only about her; it’s about the entire family, which proves difficult for both Frederik and Solveig. Emil enjoys the farming activities. He longs to see his family thrive, and he has his hands full maintaining peace and stability for Melody, while still having to smooth things over with the others. Signe’s future takes an unexpected turn. She has big decisions to make when Karin terminates their co-operation while Aksel is in Holland, and Signe ends up making a decision that affects all members of the Grønnegaard family.
