SMS Backup is a very simple app that makes a backup of your SMS and MMS messages (images and audio files), lets you share them and then restore/transfer to another phone (currently only SMS).

Important notice:
- This app doesn't restore deleted messages.
- If you're missing some messages or one side of conversation in your backup, it's probably because this app doesn't back up RCS messages (also known as Advanced Messaging) unless you use Google Messages as your default texting app. Turning Advanced Messaging off will allow the app to back up new messages only, not those already stored as RCS.

The app can export your conversations to two different formats:
1) nice-looking read-only HTML format with chat bubbles,
2) restorable JSON data file in case you plan to transfer your messages to another phone,
and saves them to your internal device storage.

You can easily send these files to your e-mail, Gmail, Google Drive or wherever you want. If you are switching to a new phone and you want to transfer your SMS messages, this app is exactly what you're looking for. It not only creates a data file which is required to restore messages, but also saves your text messages to HTML format. Therefore you can open and view your backed up messages almost anywhere, whether it is your computer or iPhone!

Does a good job as far as it goes, but it doesn't go as far as I want. The fact that you can select individual senders for backup is an excellent feature, as is the ease of zipping up threads and uploading them to Google Drive. What turned me off is that there are media types that it doesn't back up (ogg audio, and no types of video at all, afaict). And what's really bad is that it DOESN'T LET YOU KNOW WHAT IT SKIPPED. Yo can think you backed up everything, and not find out until it's too late.

This is a great program for backing up text messages. It saves all your messages and photos in a html document. Im not sure how it does with videos since I didn't have any. However when it comes to restoring, it only restores the text and not the photos. So you have manually save / download your photos, and transfer them, if you want to keep your photos and videos. there's no record of when the text with photo was sent. Maybe in details of the file you can get when the picture was created.

My brother passed away, and this app gave me a great way to save our texts. I recommend uploading the file to your Google drive or saving it in the same folder as your photos. There's a single small ad on it, and I love that. These days you really can't find apps like this. That work, aren't full of spam, and have a basic UI that gets the job done. The cherry on top was formatting the saved backup in html format, making it easy to read and view like a text stream.
