I rarely write reviews, but this time I have to. HalloTalk is one of the most heavily monetized apps I’ve ever used. Almost everything is locked behind a pricey subscription—and to make it worse, there are ads. I gave it a fair try for two weeks, hoping to connect with people from Korea and Japan before my trip. But honestly, most features are restricted unless you subscribe, so you can't check if the subscription is really worth the money. It’s disappointing.

Concept is good, but as a woman, you see a lot of men in your inbox who are not looking for language exchange. They're not learning your language or speak the language you're learning. It would be a massive improvement if you could choose to only make your profile visible to e.g. other women. I'm interested in language exchange, but if people are just using this as a potential dating app, then I'm out.

I'm learning Japanese right now and this is so helpful. You have something like a FB feed, where you see posts from people who match you (I see people who teach Japanese and want to learn English/German). Beyond just translating their posts, i can also have them transliterated to romanji (if i don't know the kanji for example) and read out loud. :) I havent had any issues with the community yet either! it's been great and super informative
