The Leap Top-Up app allows you to instantly check your balance, top-up your Leap Card and purchase tickets - directly from your NFC-enabled device.

Click the app and simply hold your Leap Card to the back of your NFC-enabled Android smartphone to instantly check your balance, purchase or collect a pre-paid ticket, or top-up your Leap Card – anytime, anywhere.

Key Features:

* Purchase pre-paid tickets and instantly load onto your Leap Card
* Collect pre-paid tickets or tickets bought online from LeapCard.ie

Note: The Leap Top-up app is only available on NFC-enabled Android devices running Android 6.0 or later.

* Please Note: Users of some NFC-enabled Android devices may experience issues using the app due to the type of NFC technology within their device. The Leap Top-up App requires devices to be capable of “NFC Read/Write” functions. Some entry-level NFC devices are only capable of “NFC Card Emulation”, which is not sufficient for using the Leap Top-up App.

Ratings and reviews

The "card reader" functionality feels impossibly imprecise. Not only do you have to find the one spot on the card that actually lets you open the app (why??) you also have to hold it in that exact position for way too long. Also, why doesn't the top up dial scale in increments of €1, I just want to top up my card a little bit? There has to be an easier way to access my balance. Just adding a code unique to the card that I could input into the app to access balance would work better and faster.

Extremely rarely works from the first time (or the tenth for that matter). It can't read my card, any operation takes forever to go through and then disconnects and shows mistakes. I never have a problem with using my phone to pay for things but this app just crashes all the time. Another thing, when you put sensitive information into it, it doesn't hide the numbers, so literally anyone can look over my shoulder and see my card details.

I've been using this app since it came out - but somehow it has gotten less reliable and stable in the year 2025 than ever before. Bank authentication will always time out/error if you are not connected to wifi/in one place while using your data(???) - if you are on the move at all it will error without fail (this is with full coverage in central dublin). Really needs an update or overhaul asap.
