The dictionary is a historical dictionary that describes the Danish language years 1700-1950. It therefore considers the importance of modern words like "PC", "bummer" and "kiggekø". In contrast, you will find detailed explanations of everyday words like "lip" and a host of rare or old words like "halløjhat", "afskørte" and "misdædisk". You may also discover that the word "condescending" on ODS 'time meant "mild and merciful," and that "pathetic" yet could mean' pathetic 'but "emotional and solemn."
Most words and meanings are illustrated with quotations from classic Danish writers.
Dictionary of the Danish Language is part of ordnet.dk and published by the Danish Language and Literature (DSL), which has more than 100 years of experience in publishing dictionaries and is behind the largest Danish native language dictionaries. The project is funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.
