About this app

iShala is an Indian music mobile app that provides flawless accompaniment for classical music practice, be it vocal, instrumental or rhythmic. It comes in 2 Editions: Standard and Pro (previously known as Premium).

It features:

• 6 Tanpuras (10 on Pro Edition)
• 2 Tablas (3 on Pro Edition)
• a Swarmandal
• a Vibraphone (Pro Edition only)
• a Harmonium
• 3 Manjeeras (6 on Pro Edition)

all fully customisable in practice sessions that can then be loaded on demand. It effectively replaces a tabla machine, a lehra player and an electronic tanpura. It is therefore an ideal tool for anyone practicing Indian classical music, or just wishing to jam along virtual Indian musicians on any other musical style.

iShala includes over 60 rhythmic cycles, melodies in more than 110 ragas and 7 different tempos. You can also create your own ragas and fine-tune each of their notes at micro-tones (or shrutis) level. Possible combinations are thus nothing short of endless!

iShala initially comes in Standard Edition, but you can upgrade it to Pro Edition through an In-App purchase option. These are one-time payments; whatever the edition you choose, you can use the app forever.

Standard Edition has all the features you need for your riyaaz, and more. But Pro Edition adds some really exciting functionality like:

• pitch correction: iShala detects the note you are currently singing, along with a coloured meter highlighting whether you are right on pitch or not. This is a precious tool to improve your accuracy.
• additional instruments: 4 tanpuras, a low pitch tabla, a vibraphone and 3 manjeeras
• manual playing of all instruments: tabla, harmonium, tanpura, swarmandal, vibraphone and manjeera
• record your own loops for any of these instruments
• record your practice session: adjust mic/music level, then press REC, sing, press STOP and the audio recording file will be generated for you to listen and share
• pull items from the Cloud: download rhythmic and/or melodic cycles posted from SwarShala users directly on your device

Two things need attention: 1. Bug: When the tanpura is playing and a phone call comes in, the tanpura continues to play in the background during the call. I have to ask the caller to wait while I manually stop iShala. 2. Enhancement: It would be great to have a metronome option for practice sessions without tabla. This feature would be really helpful! Overall, I love the app — just these two improvements would make it even better.

Thanks for the feedback. 1) was working before, maybe a bug added in an update. Will check. 2) you can use Bell for that; select the "Metronome X beats" corresponding to your cycle, adjust the volume/any FX and play.

The app has recently started glitching out for me. The audio sounds very distorted after a couple minutes, as if there's a ring modulator on it.

This app deserves 5 star rating. I would have given this app a 5 rating. but This app need update in swarmandal settings, in which aaroh and avroha needs on same screen to play both. although it's very good. and it need in standard version cause I use that.
