About this game

Richard is a modern-day vampire who likes to eat in, so he always keeps a fresh victim trapped in his lair. All of his captives eventually die; YOU hope to be the first to escape.

Match wits with Richard, his vampire cohort, Paul, and their human servant, Charles, in a treacherous game where bleeding to death is the least of your problems. And learn what it means to have something terrible in common with your captors: You must kill in order to survive.

Donor is a 139,000-word interactive novel by Elena Hearty. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

• Play as a young agoraphobic female. Although not a romance, gay, straight, and bi options are available for certain end-game scenarios.
• Act as a helpless victim or master manipulator.
• Befriend or betray your vampire captors.
• Manage your heart rate to stay alive when Richard and Paul get hungry.
• Venture into the dark corridors of Richard’s lair in search of silver weapons.
• No permadeath. If you die, automatically go back to your last choice.
• Lots of mini-games, including Blackjack and Tic-Tac-Toe!
• 14 Endings total (7 deaths, 7 “happy” endings), each with their own epilogue. Finish the game as a familiar, a vampire, a vampire-hunter, or win your freedom!

How will you outwit your vampire captors?

I wish I could express how many emotions I went through as I played through this game. Not a chapter went by when I wasn't left feeling trepidation and outright horror as the characters around me danced through a web of predatory play, teasing, anger and even occasional gaslighting, with me as the fly in the centre of that web. There were precious few moments when I wasn't fully engaged with the text as I tried to figure out how to hold onto a bit of my soul for a few moments more. This game doesn't allow you to pick your gender (unlike most of the Choice of games) and, while I can't know the author's intentions, it certainly feels intentional and necessary to tell the story here. I think it worked amazingly well for making me feel even more horrified for the main character I was inhabiting. My only caveat is this: heed trigger warnings. This is Dark Stuff dealing with incredibly lopsided power differentials, confinement and objectification. If exploring that that for catharsis doesn't sound like a good time to you, it probably won't be. But if it does sound like a thing to explore for catharsis, empathy or what have you, it's worth it to put yourself in the hands of this master storyteller. Um, so since I'm being so vague about it... I liked this game. A lot.

Great but not for everyone. The writing itself is incredible and the subject matter is very unique. It's very heavy, lots of dark and messed up themes. The game does not dance around this and I really like that. You can't pick your gender, which irked me a bit as in so used to it but the story is wonderful regardless. I went in expecting a supernatural romance and got something akin to a dark and nuanced thriller-slasher. It wasn't my cup of tea, but it was very good.

I stopped reading the "choice of games" stories for awhile and let me tell you I am so glad I started again when I did as "Donor" was right at the top of the list. Donor is easily one of the (if not THE best) interactive story I have ever had the joy of reading. The 4.99$ canadian dollars was well worth it for the full story. I will very much be rereading this until I get all the endings. My full praise goes towards miss Elena Hearty, and I'd absolutely love another interactive story from her.

What’s new

Fixed a bug (for real, this time) where the app could lose progress when the app goes into the background. If you enjoy "Donor", please leave us a written review. It really helps!
