When you connect android phone to car via usb cable, MirrorLink displays phone on your car's in-dash IVI screen, and relays touch input from your car's screen to phone. If MirrorLink certified app is used (I bought Sygic navigator), the app displays to the screen and serves as your GPS NAV, which is better than built-in Nav app from car factory, because apps on phone update all the time, whereas in-car maps only update when you take car to shop for maintenance. Like Android Auto, MirrorLink uses a port of VNC server (Automotive VNC) to cast screen to car IVI and it works great if your phone has fast CPU. Too few apps are MirrorLink certified due to harsh app design rules. Windows Phone users begged Microsoft to adopt MirrorLink but M$ refused, which may be why M$ phones lost popularity. I like MirrorLink better than Android Auto, though Google is putting much effort into AA. Android 9 Pie BREAKS MirrorLink but HTC is investigating and will hopefully fix it soon.
