The Wewelsburg District Museum provides comprehensive information at the Wewelsburg 1933 – 1945 Memorial Site both on the local activities of the SS in Wewelsburg and on the general history of the NSDAP's Schutzstaffel. At the same time, the victims of SS violence are commemorated here.
The development of Wewelsburg was decisively determined by the SS between 1933 and 1945. The "Reichsfuhrer SS" Heinrich Himmler had rented the Wewelsburg. From the idea of a "Reichsfuhrerschule SS" developed over the years plans for the establishment of a central meeting place for the SS group leader corps in the area of the municipality. From 1939 onwards, the labor force for the extensive construction work consisted mainly of prisoners from a concentration camp that had been set up for this purpose.
