If the compass direction is not correct, try rotating your phone three difference directions "while using the Compass app". First, holding the phone upright, twisting the phone around one full rotation, spinning it like a top. Now rotate phone over, pushing top of the phone away from you, rolling the bottom up completing one full rotation. Last, twist the phone around, rotating the top of the phone to the right making a complete clockwise rotation. This completes the orientation for the compass.

I enjoy this app it's helped me many times, but as most things the use you experience is only as good as the operator is. The more you understand about the operations your tools the more useful they become. Topo maps are also great for navigating thru unknown territory.
