About this game

Become part of an art project!
The app “School of Consequences. Exercises for a Different Life ”is an interactive art project that invites you to join in.

Why is?
No less than a new ideal of life: the lack of consequences. What would a life look like that has no consequences. Or more precisely: That has no negative consequences - for other people, for animals, plants, the planet? This form of lack of consequences may be unattainable, but it is still worth striving for - like freedom, equality and justice.

What happens in the "School of Consequences"?
In the “School of Consequences” app, you will find a series of games, exercises and tasks that are intended to help you test yourself in the absence of consequences. This includes, for example, overcoming overconfidence, learning to wait, practicing renunciation and handing over decisions to chance.
All exercises are explained in a short video by Friedrich von Borries, there are also interviews with experts who deepen and explain the subject areas, for example with the sociologists Hartmut Rosa and Stephan Lessenich, the art historian Bénédicte Savoy, the computer scientist Sarah Spiekermann and the social psychologist Harald Welzer.

What is my own contribution?
Some of the games, exercises and tasks can be done comfortably from the sofa. Others ask for more personal commitment: all users of the app are invited to individual and collective artistic activity. For example, queues in public spaces are to be initiated and a course for egg running is to be set up. The documentation of these actions with photo and video should be shared by the users in the social media with the hashtag #konunterlos in order to stimulate a broad discussion about "lack of consequences".

The exhibition
The app is part of the exhibition “School of Consequences. Exercises for a Different Life ”at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (November 6, 2020 to May 9, 2021). The artistic-discursive project by Friedrich von Borries asks what a life without consequences could look like, what precursors there are and what effects a striving for it has on our everyday life, on the economic and social order, on our beliefs and on our togetherness.

The app is the result of a cooperation between the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) and the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK). It was developed by Friedrich von Borries and the Berlin artist collective Refrakt (Alexander Govoni and Carla Streckwall). The introductory tutorial was developed by the Austrian director and documentary filmmaker Jakob Brossmann.
