About this game

While investigating a murder in a small Scottish town, you’ll find yourself embroiled in a world of secrets, cultists, and abyssal horror. What are you willing to do to solve the case? And what will you do when you don’t like the answer?

"Highlands, Deep Waters" is a 340,000 word interactive horror novel by Fernando B Neves and Lucas Zaper, where your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

• Play as an insightful Detective, a resourceful Criminal or a mysterious Scholar.
• Gather and interpret clues with the Deduction system. Will you solve the case?
• Face the hidden truths that derange your mind with the Sanity system.
• A carefully crafted town including hand-drawn maps, unique history and peculiar inhabitants.
• Play as a male, female, gay or straight. The Abyssal Ones treat everyone just the same.

This is a game with a lot of evocative horror imagery, an interesting mystery and a lot of clever twists which unfortunately loses steam and spirals down towards the end. A great build up is totally wasted in favor of just infodumping everything on you and railroading you into certain endings at the last bit. Also the phonetically spelled out accents are A LOT at certain points and a huge detraction of the writing.

I've never liked crime or investigation stuff but I've never played such an extensive choices game. It took me a whole day just playing through it. The mysteriousness, the creepiness, the through investigations. And what is most interesting is the sanity stat, it could literally change everything perspectively, either bring you close to doom or get you by just another day with you stable. I know it's silly but I wish there was romance lol maybe the male lecturer? Thank you for spooking me! :(

Of the thriller genre, this is my favorite. I may be biased considering how I like sleuth and investigation stories but this one got me hooked. It's creepy in every way and the story is well written and well thought. I also love how you can choose archetypes like a pokemon trainer choosing a starter. And how I love the change of characters. I was enjoying myself one moment then.. okay, I'm a new person. But that's very awesome. I wonder if there will be any chance for a second book.

What's new

Fixed a bug (for real, this time) where the app could lose progress when the app goes into the background. If you enjoy "Highlands, Deep Waters", please leave us a written review. It really helps!
