About this app

SmarterNoise is a sound level meter that measures sound levels in video and audio modes, records video and sound, and informs you about the risks of noise exposure. With SmarterNoise you can also record audio and measure long-term while the app is running in the background.

SmarterNoise includes a camera, optional location data, and easy sharing of measurement results as well. From the archive you can go back to the video and audio files you've saved on your phone. With SmarterNoise you take sound level and noise measuring to a new level never available before.

SmarterNoise features smart icons that react to the measured sound levels based on current research results focusing on the health and well-being effects of noise pollution. With the SmarterNoise icons you easily understand how hearing, cognitive performance, health and hearing may be effected during different levels of noise exposure. Awareness of the harmful effects of noise is increasing globally, and exposure to noise is considered a versatile risk factor for well-being and health, especially in noise-polluted urban environments.

Features of SmarterNoise:

• Sound level measurement in video mode
• Sound level measurement in audio mode
• Sound level camera
• Recording in video and audio modes
• Long-term measurement in both video and audio modes
• Sound level activated audio recording
• Background measurement in audio mode
• Full HD (1080p), HD (720p) or VGA (480p) video resolution
• Three video quality settings
• Restart measurement
• Archive for saved files
• Sharing of saved files
• Calibration
• Smart icons
• Optional saving of location with measurements
• Time and date display
• 10 second sound level average (LAeq, decibel)
• 60 second sound level average (LAeq, decibel)
• Maximum and minimum decibel levels

About decibels and sound measurement

The unit for measuring noise and sound is called a decibel. Because the decibel scale is logarithmic, a sound with an intensity that is twice that of a reference sound corresponds to an increase of about 3 decibels. The reference point of 0 decibel is set at the intensity of the least perceptible sound, the threshold of hearing. On such a scale a 10-decibel sound is 10 times the intensity of the reference sound. Highlighting this is important as already a few decibels higher or lower makes a noticeable difference in how noise is perceived.

The preferred method to describe sound levels that vary over time, resulting in a single decibel value measuring the total sound energy over the period is called Leq. It is however common practice to measure sound levels using the A-weighting, which effectively cuts off the lower and higher frequencies, that the average person cannot hear. In this case Leq is written as LAeq. LAeq measures a formulated average which emphasizes higher sound peaks, and is one of the most common measurements used by professionals to measure noise. All averages in SmarterNoise are measured in LAeq.

About noise

According to the findings of the World Health Organisation (WHO), noise is the second largest environmental cause of health problems, after the impact of air quality. While environmental awareness in general has increased, the burden from noise has not yet been realized by the general public. People especially in urban environments are subjected to noise during day and night, at home and at work. Noise pollution has increased over the years due to extensive traffic, increased air travel, urbanization, and industrial noise exposure. Because of the complex and frequent issue of everyday noise, we developed SmarterNoise in order for people to understand noise better.

Impressive app! The user can unlock additional features by simply watching a 5 second ad -- good way for devs to get revenue & less annoying to the user. Suggestion: I wanted to directionally locate the source of the noise. "Locate Source" would be a great feature. Also, it rated a neighbor's beeping alarm clock as mild cognitive impairment. That setting is too low for a repetitive, spiking, low db noise. Thanks!

I needed something to provide proof of noise disturbances and this app is better than any other app that I found to do that. I would like to see a couple of additional features: 1. The ability to record video that includes the full screen and not just the video taken by the camera. 2. The ability to record a video in the audio only mode so that I have location data, time stamps and graphs but no video from the camera.

Hi and thanks for the feedback. You can record in full screen as well, just press the button for enlargening the screen from the start screen. If you want to record only audio click the microphone and it gives you a graph for the measurement with date and time

So far its working good & properly & if the settings are right...like the sensitivity, voice inhancer, speaker boost & etc are set to the correct setting & volume then it so good that it picks up the softest & lowest tone of whispering conversations. Out of only a select few choices...this is one of the best & most helpful apps that was created that actually works & that does exactly what it says it will/can!!! It really is great!!

What's new

Added a new display type to the live decibel graph: one-second boxes.
