The Byzantine spiritual writer, Blessed John Moschos, at the end of the 6th century, together with his disciple Sophronius (the future Patriarch of Jerusalem), made a great journey through the monasteries of the Middle East. Having visited almost all the famous Palestinian and Syrian monasteries, they visited Egypt, penetrated south to the glorious Thebaid and even the distant Oasis, everywhere looking closely at the ascetic life and studying it with love. The information they collected compiled a book called “Spiritual Meadow.”
