The present Baroque church located at Matejki Square belonged in its original shape to one of the oldest Romanesque temples in Krakow. It was located in the center of the northernmost settlement of Krakow's pre-location settlement, along the trade route running from north to south.
The church foundation in 1184 by Prince Casimir II the Just and the Cracow bishop Gedko was associated with bringing from Italy to the Wawel Cathedral the relics of St. Florian - an early Christian martyr from the 4th century, considered in the Middle Ages as a symbol of the steadfast Knight of Christ and patron protecting from fires.
