About this app

Sound Meter is in the 4th set of the Smart Tools collection.

Have you ever suffered from the noise of the neighbors?
SPL(sound pressure level) meter app uses your embedded microphone to measure noise volume in decibels(db), and shows a reference.

REMEMBER! Most smartphone microphones are aligned to human voice (300-3400Hz, 40-60dB). Voice calls do not require high-performance microphones.
Therefore the maximum value is LIMITED by manufacturers, and very loud sound(100+ dB) cannot be recognized. Moto G4 (max.94), Galaxy S6 (85dB), Nexus 5 (82dB) ...

You can easily check if my voice is loud in a lecture or if the TV volume I turned on is not too loud.
See 6th images. I calibrated major Android devices with an actual sound meter (dBA). You can trust the result in routine-noise levels (40-70dB). Please use it as an auxiliary tool.

I found this app, and installed it to see what noise level my neighbors have been sending my way. 7 months and I had no way to stop them until now. Most of last night was between 76 and 81 decibels. Our County has a quiet ordinance and now I can prove the noise level. I took screen pics of the levels. This seems simple, easy to use & highly advised for Android phone. I did not realize the damage sound does to our bodies, but I sure do now.

I just now tried a bunch of these, looking for a meter app to help find the correct level that audio should be mixed at, for my recording studio. Sure, I'll calibrate it with an actual meter when I'm finished with renovations but this app is pretty close, if it's not spot on. All the other ones I tried (started from the highest rating down) were way off. They were still only reading 73dB when it was dangerously loud and 43dB when the only noise in the room was a "silent" computer fan.

Update: years later this issue from old review isn't even fixed. Now with ads. This used to be the best but now other options are better. Old review: Certainly a good and well designed tool but when you click on the button to alternate between graph and text samples it emits a loud noise which influences readings.

We apologize for any inconvenience. In your case, turn off the [Sound effect] option in settings. Even if you quietly touch the screen, sound pressure is generated although it cannot be heard by our ears.

What's new

- v1.7.20 : More models are calibrated
- v1.7.19 : Support for Android 14
