There is a path behind you.

Every day you have lived is a step along it. The loud ones, the empty ones, the ones you were barely present for — the path does not sort them. It just keeps going.

Tonight it asks you one question.

Answer in a sentence. That is the whole of it.

Something grows where you answered. A tree. A small flower. Footprints leading off into the grass. Tomorrow the path runs a little further, and the thing you kept stays where you left it.

The question is not always the same one. Some nights it asks what you noticed. Some nights what you were glad of, or what you wanted to stay inside a moment longer, or what you would keep if you could keep only one thing.

Come back in a month. Scroll back along the path until you find something you do not remember putting there. Touch it.

The day comes back.

Here is the part worth staying for. Noticing gets easier.

Three things hold it up.

*Attention*, first. Being where you are for one minute, on purpose — this is the mindfulness part, and it is built for the gap you already have rather than the forty-five minutes you do not. Keep it up, and you start catching things earlier, while there is still day left to be inside.

Then *appreciation*. Noticing what was good without pretending the day was — gratitude that only works on good days is no use on the others, which is why you are never asked for three things you are grateful for.

And *knowing yourself*, which is what a month of one-sentence answers quietly turns into. That is the first thing to go in a stretch that wears you down, whether what wears you down is work or a house full of people who need you: you stop being able to tell. A record that does not argue back is worth more then than it sounds now.

Mindfulness, gratitude, self-awareness. The words are worn out. The practices are not.

Days you say nothing are still days. The path grows anyway. There is nothing here to break by being away, and nothing that dies while you are gone, and when you come back nobody mentions it.

If a day is too loud for words, sit for a while instead. Short mindfulness practices — a breathing space, grounding through the senses, a body scan — a few minutes each, guided one line at a time, with nothing to write.
Mindfulness, gratitude, self-awareness — and a trail that grows with every day.
