The two core features of this application are:
1. A screen that helps to calculate the avalanche risk, based on the avalanche report, using the Reduction Method developed by Swiss avalanche expert Werner Munter.
2. A screen that provides a safety checklist based on the 3x3 Filter Method developed by Werner Munter.
This application can be used anywhere in the world as it has no regional specific information, but is best in northern latitudes between 35° and 55°. This covers most popular ski areas. Extra caution must be used in far northern areas such as Alaska and Scandinavia as weaker solar radiation makes the snow pack less stable. It must also be adapted for the southern hemisphere.
This app is designed to be used in conjunction with other sources for weather and avalanche forecasts. These can be accessed through the internet, MMS services, television, newspapers, official bulletins and other region specific phone apps.

How does Snøg Avalanche Buddy work? Simple, via a WiFi signal, a strong signal that can reach over 40 metres and is very precise in its localisation. Snøg provides searching and sending out trackable signals via WiFi. Snøg doesn't use your internet connection, it only uses WiFi technology.

The slope incline is a key parameter for European decision making strategies in wintery and avalanche prone terrain.
The SNOWHOW-Freeride App is no substitute for any other tools of orientation and decision making and necessary safety gear. Shown tracks and map information are not recommendations for any terrain use.
The GPS-function of your phone allows you to find your current position on the map and also records your track on the mountain.
Combined with the color coding of the slope incline, you can evaluate the terrain around you.
You can save your tracks on the phone and view them later. Once saved, you can synchronize your snowhow.info web-account with your phone (uploading your own tracks and downloading public available tracks).
You can make your tracks public. Every other user of snowhow will be able to use your tracks on the mountain.
The more tracks we all publish, the more information we all get.
Color coding for incline:
The color coding shows the steepness of the terrain in four sectors.
These sectors are used in decision making strategies in Europe. The knowledge and correct use of decision making strategies (see http://goo.gl/y5Rmx ) is essential to be able to use the SNOWHOW-Freeride App properly. If you are not familiar with any kind of decision making strategies or any other knowledge about decision making in avanlanche prone terrain, do not use the SNOWHOW-Freeride App.
Opacity for color coding:
You can adjust how strong the colors for the steepness should appear on your screen. Click the “adjustments”-button and go to opacity. Any value from 0-100 changes the opacity.
Resolution and color coding:
Each color coded tile shows an area of 10 x 10 metres or real terrain. Keep in mind, that within 10 metres the steepness of a slope can change dramatically.
If you want to adjust the map on your smartphone to reality, click on the compass-function. The screen will show you in which direction you should turn your phone to orientate it to North-South.
Weather data and Avalanche Bulletin:
If you go online with your smartphone, the SNOWHOW-Freeride App will automatically load the newest avalanche bulletin. The menu-feature shows you if your avalanche bulletin is up-dated (green button). If your avalanche bulletin is out of date, the button will be red.
This service is only available in Tyrol/Austria.
Once online, an extra layer shows you the weather stations of Tyrol/Austria. Clicking on any of them, you will be directed to web-based information of the specific weather station.
is an unique smartphone app, which estimates the risk of triggering an avalanche or slab by skiing down a given route. The app is always positioned to user's present location and this is why it works across Europe. With the help of risk-analysis the danger of the tour is calculated by only one click.
As a result a probabilistic "stop or go"- decision will be displayed. The remaining residual risk is defined by the following formula:
Accepted residual risk = risk potential / precautionary measures
The avalanche bulletin represents hereby the risk potential. The precautionary measures (slope inclination and exposition) are restricting the possibilities for skiing down steep slopes, which deemed to be risky in relation to the avalanche bulletin ratio.
The model follows the elementary reduction method described in specialized avalanche literature by mountain guide Werner Munter of Switzerland.
WhiteScout, if used properly and permanently, can reduce todays relationship from 1 death by avalanches per 50'000 ski slopes to 1:100'000 in future.
