The Comprehensive Explanation of the Interpretation of the Verses of the Qur'an, known as Tafsir al-Tabari, by Imam Abu Ja'far al-Tabari (d. 310 AH), is the foremost reference for transmitted interpretations among Sunni Muslims. Abu Hamid al-Isfarayini said, "If a man were to travel to China to obtain a copy of Muhammad ibn Jarir's commentary, it would not be too much to ask."
The author of Lisan al-Mizan mentioned that Ibn Khuzaymah borrowed Ibn Jarir's commentary from someone who had copied it from al-Tabari, but returned it after several years, saying, "I examined it from beginning to end; I know of no one on the face of the earth more knowledgeable than Ibn Jarir." Ibn Taymiyyah said: “As for the commentaries available to people, the most authentic is that of Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, for he mentions the statements of the early generations with sound chains of transmission, and it contains no innovation, nor does he quote from those accused of fabrication.”
