Al-Qurtubi's commentary, titled "Al-Jami' li-Ahkam al-Qur'an wa al-Mubayyin lima Tadammun min al-Sunnah wa Ahkam al-Furqan" (The Comprehensive Collection of Rulings of the Qur'an, Clarifying What It Contains from the Sunnah and the Rulings of the Criterion), is one of the finest books of exegesis based on transmitted reports. It was authored by Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Farah al-Ansari al-Khazraji al-Andalusi al-Qurtubi, the commentator. He was born in Cordoba, in the land of Andalusia, where he learned Arabic and poetry alongside the Holy Qur'an. He acquired his extensive knowledge in jurisprudence, grammar, and Qur'anic readings. He also studied rhetoric, Qur'anic sciences, and other subjects. He then came to Egypt and settled there. He died in Upper Egypt on the night of Monday, the ninth of Shawwal, in the year 671 AH. His grave is now visited in Minya, east of the Nile. He was among the righteous worshippers of God and the learned scholars, ascetic in worldly matters, preoccupied with the affairs of the Hereafter. He spent his life engaged in worship and writing. Sheikh al-Dhahabi said of him: "A master scholar, deeply learned, with beneficial works that demonstrate his vast knowledge and profound understanding."
