About this game

Spades, a descendent of Whist, is a four player card game played with a standard 52 card deck. The object of the game is to predict how many "tricks" you will take during each hand (called the Bid) and then take at least that many tricks during play. Spades are trump. Each player is dealt 13 cards to start the hand. The player to the left of the dealer plays the first card. Each player must play a card of the same suit as the lead card but may play any card if they do have any cards in that suit. The highest card of the suit lead wins the trick or, if a spade was played, the highest spade wins. The winner of each trick leads to the next.

You can choose between two games: Cutthroat, where all four players act on their own behalf, or Team, where the four players comprise two teams and their bids are summed as well as the number of tricks taken to get the team score.

The Bid takes place at the beginning of each hand. Try to predict exactly how many tricks you can take and then try to take that amount duing the play. If you take extra tricks, they are considered "bags" and you will be penalized when you have accumulated a set number of "bags". This number depends on the game type: 6 bags if playing to 300 points or 10 bags if the game goal is 500 points.

Bid NIL if you think you can avoid taking any tricks! You will be rewarded with either 100 or 60 points depending on the game type.
