About this app

This is a very simple application for browsing Open street maps.

- gestures for moving and zooming the map

- zoom buttons for using native OSM zoom levels

- map button for switching between OSM classic and OpenTOPO maps

- follow your location

The application is based on OSMDroid-library, so all displayed maps are cached and can be displayed without internet.

The app is open sourced under MIT license:

This appears to be a re-badged version of 'gvSig maps' which is marvellous as it's an uber-reliable and compact interface with OSM. Those requesting a search function are obviously Gen Z'ers. Look here dear, we grew up with paper maps, you didn't have a search function with them either (unless it was an A-Z) and we survived the 20th C without dying from thirst on an epic 200yard quest to find the nearest coffee shop. Get a grip.

App experience is simple and fully satisfying. However, there's a foible that sometimes I see a tool for measuring distances on the lower edge of the screen (which is useful!) and sometimes not. Looked under settings, but found no option for this.

I'm fortunate that in the area where I live many of the local footpaths are shown on OSM - they aren't all on Google Maps. With this app I can walk the footpaths and know exactly where I am, I can also navigate and plan routes. It's very fast, even on my cheap entry-level smartphone, and it's very simple and reliable to use. Excellent piece of software!
