Reclaim Arm – Functional Arm & Hand Practice After Stroke
Reclaim Arm is designed to support people living with stroke-related arm and hand impairment to practise meaningful movements and everyday functional tasks.
Rather than simply exercising individual muscles or joints, Reclaim Arm focuses on repetitive practice of functional movements that relate to everyday activities.
The app guides you through watching a movement and then practising it yourself, helping you focus on the movement and repeat it consistently.
🧠 Built around neuroplasticity
Recovery after stroke can involve the brain's ability to adapt and reorganise — known as neuroplasticity.
Reclaim Arm incorporates principles of repetitive practice and action observation to encourage active use of the affected arm and hand.
The approach behind the app was developed from research investigating this type of training following stroke.
🖐️ Practise meaningful tasks
The app includes a growing library of functional tasks involving the arm and hand, from simple movements and object handling through to more complex everyday activities.
Tasks are organised according to increasing levels of complexity, allowing practice to progress as your confidence and ability develop.
Where appropriate, you can practise using real household objects and equipment. This helps make practice more relevant to everyday life.
👀 Watch. Practise. Repeat.
Each task follows a simple structure:
Watch the movement → Practise the movement → Repeat
You can choose the arm you want to practise and record how confident you feel performing each task.
Your progress can then be tracked over time.
📈 See your progress
Reclaim Arm allows you to keep track of things such as:
• Sessions completed
• Tasks practised
• Time spent practising
• Task complexity
• Confidence over time
• Task progression
Seeing changes over time can help you recognise progress that may otherwise be difficult to notice from day to day.
💪 Your practice, your pace
Recovery is different for everyone.
Reclaim Arm doesn't expect every task to be easy, and difficulty with a task doesn't mean you're failing.
The app allows you to work with different levels of task complexity and provides opportunities to return to a simpler task when needed.
Progress isn't always a straight line.
📺 Practise at home
Reclaim Arm is designed for home-based practice.
Where supported by your device, you can display the app on a larger screen such as a television, making it easier to see the movement while practising.
🔬 Based on research
The training approach used in Reclaim Arm is based on a research study investigating action observation and repetitive functional task practice following stroke.
The research received Human Research Ethics Committee approval.
Participants in the research study demonstrated meaningful improvements in measures of their stroke-affected arm and hand function following the training programme.
Research findings cannot guarantee the same results for every person. Recovery following stroke varies between individuals.
Important information
Reclaim Arm is intended to support rehabilitation practice and education. It does not replace assessment, treatment or advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
If you have had a stroke, speak with your treating healthcare professional about whether this type of practice is appropriate for you.
Only practise tasks that you feel you can perform safely. Stop if you experience pain, dizziness, feel unwell or experience unexpected symptoms.
