About this app

Beethovium is an ear-training app for anyone who wants to hear music more clearly.

It is built around listening, not memorising. You play, you hear, you respond, and you find out straight away whether you were right.

HARMONY
Train your ear on real chord progressions. A track plays, and at each chord change you identify what you are hearing, either by Roman numeral or by chord name. Work through a curriculum that grows from simple tonal movement into richer harmony and inversions. Practise freely on individual tracks, or take on a scored performance run when you want to test yourself.

MELODY
Sharpen your sense of pitch within a key. Beethovium plays a reference, then a single note, and you identify it, either by its scale degree or by finding it on the on-screen piano. The levels move steadily from a couple of anchored notes through the full scale, into chromatic notes, and on to playing in any key, so your ear keeps being stretched.

THEORY
Learn the ideas behind the sounds. Train your recognition of intervals in several ways, by ear and by sight, from naming the interval between two notes to working out a note from the interval that reaches it.

HOW IT WORKS
Practice mode is open and relaxed, for getting the reps in. Performance mode is scored, for measuring how far you have come. Your progress is kept on your device, so you can always pick up where you left off.
