About this app

ChaTor is a private messenger that runs entirely over the Tor network. There is no central server and no account: no phone number, no email address. Your identity is a .onion address generated on your own device.

HOW IT WORKS
Every installation creates its own .onion service. Messages travel directly from one device to the other through the Tor network, without passing through any intermediate server. To start talking to someone, you simply exchange .onion addresses.

ENCRYPTION
- End-to-end encryption with the Olm/Double Ratchet protocol: keys change with every message, so compromising one key exposes neither earlier nor later messages.
- Every message is signed with the device's Ed25519 key, so the recipient can verify it really comes from the sender and was not altered.
- The message database is encrypted on your phone (SQLCipher, AES-256).

VERIFYING YOUR CONTACT
Every conversation has a safety number. Compare it with your contact in person or over a channel you trust: if it matches on both phones, the connection is authentic. If your contact's keys change, the verification is cleared and you are asked to check again.

FEATURES
- Replies to individual messages
- Disappearing messages (1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days)
- Delete for me / delete for everyone
- App lock with passphrase and biometric unlock
- Screenshots and screen recording blocked
- Notifications never show message content
- Generate a new .onion address at any time
- Light and dark themes
- Available in English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Dutch and Russian

WHAT IT DOESN'T DO
ChaTor collects no data, shows no ads, and contains no analytics or tracking. There is no server that can deliver messages on your behalf: both devices must be online and connected to Tor for a message to arrive.

GOOD TO KNOW
No app can protect you if your phone is compromised or if someone can see your screen. If you forget your passphrase, your messages cannot be recovered — there is no recovery procedure, because there is no server holding your data.
