About this app

Shaina is a personal safety app for the walk home.

Hold the SOS button, or shake your phone hard, and Shaina starts an emergency:
it saves what is happening, records where you are, and gets your country's
emergency number dialling. Your trusted contacts get a message with your
coordinates and a map link they can tap.

It works with no signal, no account and no internet connection. Nothing you
put into Shaina ever leaves your phone.

REACH HELP WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE SCREEN

• Hold SOS on the home screen — holding, not tapping, so a pocket cannot
press it, and five seconds to cancel before anything happens
• Shake the phone — Shaina learns your gesture so it does not fire on a bus,
and eases off while the phone is in a bag or pocket
• An SOS button on your home screen, as a widget
• A tile in your Quick Settings, two swipes from the lock screen
• Long-press the app icon

All five start the same emergency, countdown included, so you can cancel.

A TIMER FOR GETTING THERE

Set it before you set off — five minutes to twelve hours. An alarm sounds for
the last minute; if you have not tapped "I'm safe" when it reaches zero,
Shaina starts the emergency on her own. It survives the app being closed.

A CALL THAT GETS YOU OUT

Make your phone ring, now or in a couple of minutes, with whatever name you
like on the screen. It looks and sounds like any other call, so leaving stops
being a decision anyone can argue with.

YOUR CIRCLE

Add one or two people you would actually want to hear from you at 2 a.m.
They do not need this app, and they will never know they are on the list
until you need them. Pick their country from the list so the number is right.

Shaina can send the alert herself, or open your messaging app with the words
written out and your people already chosen — your choice, in settings. While
an emergency stays open she sends your contacts a fresh location every ten
minutes, so they can see which way you are going.

A SAFETY GUIDE THAT WORKS OFFLINE

Twenty-one situations, each with what to do first: being followed, an unsafe
taxi, harassment in public, a spiked drink, someone hurting you at home, no
signal in an unfamiliar place, someone who will not let you leave. Search it,
or read through. Shaina can read the steps aloud through earbuds so you can
keep your eyes up.

You can speak to it instead of typing. Shaina only ever uses on-device speech
recognition — if your phone would have to send the recording to a server,
Shaina does not offer the microphone at all.

PRACTISE BEFORE YOU NEED IT

A practice run does the whole thing with nothing sent: it shows the exact
message your contacts would get and which number would be dialled. There is a
short tour the first time you open the app, and you can run it again whenever.

RECORD WHAT HAPPENS

Optionally, Shaina records audio while an emergency is open. It stays on your
phone as a file you can play back or delete, one recording at a time or all of
them at once.

NOTHING LEAVES YOUR PHONE

• No account, no sign-up, no password
• No servers — there is nowhere for your data to be uploaded to
• No analytics, no advertising, no third-party trackers
• Shaina has no internet permission at all
• Your contacts, history and location are stored encrypted on your device
• Uninstalling deletes all of it

Location is read while an emergency is active and at no other time.

ONE THING SHAINA IS NOT

Shaina is not an emergency service and cannot dispatch anybody. It dials the
number you have configured and hands over to your phone. Where there is no
mobile network at all, it can record what happened but it cannot transmit
anything.

Emergency numbers are verified for 62 countries and stored on the phone, not
looked up. Elsewhere Shaina dials 112 and asks you to confirm it.
