The app is free to download. Subscribers receive unlimited access. Most current New Yorker subscribers have unlimited access to the app as part of their existing subscription. Subscribers with a print-only subscription may not have unlimited access. App subscribers have full access to the Web site, including the archive and most recent issue. Users who have trouble accessing stories can e-mail [e-mail] for assistance.

Non-subscribers may access the app by starting a free trial. A subscription costs $11.99 a month or $119.99 annually, and includes a 7-day free trial, after which it will automatically renew and your account will be charged, unless auto-renew is turned off before the end of the current period. Any unused portion of a free trial period, if offered, will be forfeited when the user purchases a subscription to that publication, where applicable.

Subscriptions may be managed by the user, and auto-renewal may be turned off by updating the user’s Google Play Store subscriptions after purchase. Payment will be charged to the Google Play account at confirmation of purchase.

Ratings and reviews

In audio the long-standing foibles remain. Like the story stopping midstream and a "Can't play audio" message popping up. And if you try continuing playback the app gives you Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", a problem that's both charming and infuriating. (Restarting the app lets you continue.) The ability to cue stories for playback is also overdue.

The New Yorker has conceived a way to dominate online media in coming years with a combination of robust editorial standards, high end content and abundant audio options. This app does not deliver on that potential. Downloads don't happen, streams are dropped, and bugs abound. If it worked properly this app would totally replace podcasts in my life because I can't stand mediocre content. Alas, it doesn't work properly, nor does it seem to understand how people consume podcasts.

Update: I just cancelled my subscription after opening the app and seeing a grotesque and disturbing AI generated animation of Sam Altman with multiple heads. No. Just no. Original review: The good: access to every article published in the hundred year run of the magazine. The bad: way too many pointless little animations in the app. Distracting and annoying. The app works fine for me otherwise.
