San Martino Spino in the Municipality of Mirandola is known for a centuries-old tradition of horse breeding, an activity that has become an integral part of the culture of the Bassa Modenese. The collection of testimonies and objects housed in the Barchessone Portovecchio aims to preserve the memory of the historical and human events which, from the Middle Ages to the recent past, revolve around the horse. From the 14th century with the Pico family we reach 1883 with the creation of the "Fifth Horse Breeding Deposit" by the Kingdom of Italy.
