About this game

Hnefatafl is an ancient Scandinavian board game whose variants were played all over medieval Europe before chess was even invented. In those so called Tafl games two different sized armies fight each other. The invading black army tries to capture the white king, while the defending white army tries to protect their king and help him escape.

Often also called the Game of the Vikings Hnefatafl tells many stories, like the Moskowites invasion of Sweden or the Viking hordes pillaging Britain. But no matter what the story is one thing always stays the same: The hunt for the king.

Even though the rules aren't complicated the game offers fascinating strategies and rewards tactical play. Try to surround the enemy pieces, plan ahead, lay traps and force your opponent into surrender. Will you capture the king for gold and glory? Can the loyal guards hold back the invading forces and secure the flight of their king?

For offline and online play you can create your own custom variants -- with over 200,000 different variants possible!

The game features cross platform play with iOS, Windows and Linux and you can use a single account to access all your matches from any of your devices. The multiplayer is asynchronous so you can continue your matches whenever you want.

I'm not a fan of the redesign. I liked the simplicity of the old one. However, the AI is slowly improving. With that said, Ansgar is a little freaking cheater!! I took screenshots of him putting captured pieces back on the board, capturing my pieces by jumping on them (like chess), and even moving my King!! Still, it's fun. The varieties of the game really make it so you won't get bored.

Due to some performance improvements the AI accessed memory which it shouldn't have access to. That should be fixed with version 3.18. If there is anything particular that you preferred in the old version send me a note and I will see if we can find a compromise. Keep on tafling.

There was an unusual bug I found. I have no idea how it is triggered but it made the ai basically wait to lose. It started when I switched sides on the historical board after losing constantly as white. It was funny at first but then it got boring. I eventually started giving it obvious opertunities to win. But it almost avoided them. So I eventually cornered the king and pushed it to the edge. Basically forcing it to win. That seemed to fix it though.

Sooo many pop ups. If i play one game, I end up with 20 or more windows open in my browser when I'm done. Game works well, but that's unbearable. Downloaded through the Google play store. It only happens with this ap. I determined it has something to do with clicking your ads at the bottom of the game. If my thumb slips and i tap an ad, I get at least 20 browser windows opening.

If you click the banner ad it might open a browser window in the foreground. Never in the background. If you mind can you send a video of such behavior to and I will forward it to Unity, the ad provider. There are also no ads at the end of the game, only banner ads during a match.

What's new

Long Clicking (or right clicking) an offline match in the main menu will now offer the option to rename matches.
Added the option to always display the remaining time in an online match that has a timeout set. This was previously only available for quick matches.
Updated the translations.
When searching for opponents for new online matches the ignore button now also works.
When using the "Next Match" button it will now respect the selected order for online matches.
