A falling block puzzle where the block is a towel.

Cloth does not behave like a brick. It folds while it falls, it drapes over what it lands on, and it carries weight. A heavy towel dropped on a single point drives straight through the layer beneath it. Spread that same weight across a whole row and it rests.

Fill a row and it goes into a machine. The machines are the score: they pay while they run, and several running at once pay far more than one after another. The board is not the goal, it is the queue.

The towel that comes next hangs on a washing line above the room, and it slides along it. It drops from wherever it has got to when the towel before it lands, so where the next one enters is your timing rather than luck.

Now and then the laundry floods. The pipes shudder, everything falls half again as fast, and every row you close is worth three. Cloth standing in the water slides toward the drain, pushing scattered gaps together into one you can actually fill.

What’s new

The floor tells you where the towel is going.

Eleven lamps under the board follow the falling towel and brighten as it comes down. White means it will come to rest on whatever is beneath it. Amber means it will punch through, and the light reaches down through the pile when it will go all the way to the floor.

That is the whole change. The rest is tidying underneath.
