About this app

Latchat is group messaging that never asks for your phone number.

NO PHONE NUMBER, NO ACCOUNT, NO EMAIL

Your identity is simply a secure key generated and stored locally on your phone. There are no SMS codes to intercept, no public directories to be found in, and nobody can message you out of the blue. You are only reachable inside a group, by the people already in it with you. And even they don't get your number, because there is no number to give.

IT KEEPS WORKING WHEN THE INTERNET DOESN'T

When you have a connection, messages travel over the internet. When you don't, or when the network is completely overloaded, the phones in your group automatically pass messages to each other directly via Bluetooth. As long as someone is close enough (usually about 20 meters indoors, further outside), the message gets through. If everyone is out of range, your message simply waits until a path opens up again.

END-TO-END ENCRYPTED

Everything you send is sealed on your phone before it leaves, and can only be opened by the members of your group. We use a relay server to hold messages when a phone is asleep or out of range, but it only holds sealed envelopes. It has no key to open them.

WHO IT IS FOR

• Families looking for a truly private space.
• One-on-one chats with a salesperson, driver, or tradesperson. You can communicate without handing over your personal number, and easily close the connection when the job is done.
• Tour groups, event crews, or classes where the organizer knows everyone, but the members don't necessarily need to know each other.

YOUR PERSONAL AI ASSISTANT, COMPLETELY OFFLINE

Latchat comes with a built-in AI assistant, powered by a model that lives entirely on your device. This means your conversations with the AI never leave your phone, never cross the internet, and cost absolutely zero credits to use. It can help you with a wide range of everyday tasks:
• Reminders: Say when, in a normal sentence. Important ones can ring at your alarm volume for up to 30 seconds.
• Notes and checklists: Save an idea or build a list by saying what you want. You can also share text in from another app and it will keep it for you.
• Writing: Ask for a draft of an email, a story, a song lyric, or a few sentences about something.
• Translation: Between English and other languages.
• Search your saved items: Find a note, a reminder or a checklist without scrolling for it.
• Your schedule: Ask what is coming up.
• Smart Auto-Reply: Let the AI handle group mentions when you are busy. Just turn it on, say you are driving, and it will reply on your behalf. All automated responses are clearly marked so people know you did not type them. For safety, the AI will never reply to an SOS alert.

HONEST LIMITS (BECAUSE A MESSAGING APP SHOULDN'T SURPRISE YOU)

• Android only. There is no iPhone version yet.
• Seven people per group. For larger crowds, the organizer has to run several groups bridged by their own phone. If that phone is turned off, those groups stop hearing each other.
• Bluetooth has physical limits. Offline messaging requires someone to be nearby. How far they can be depends on the phones and what is physically between them.
• Server visibility. We use a relay server, and our privacy policy is upfront about what it can see: who talks to whom, when, and how much data is sent. It never sees a single word of your content.
• Push notifications. We use Google's push service to wake up a sleeping phone. Google can see that this app is installed and when a notification is sent, but they never see what's inside it.
• Code audit. Nobody outside this project has independently audited the code yet.
