I'm changing my review to reflect the new version. I still love having the native speakers to listen to. And the new format of videos can be fun to listen to for a time or two but that is seriously the only thing that works without multiple glitches! It no longer even tracks your progress in the scenarios. Instead, it starts you with the very first lesson every time. It is no longer worth paying for. I'm giving up and canceling my subscription.

Memrise *WAS* an incredible app for learning vocabulary and a very appreciated part of my language learning efforts. However, recent changes and lack of support for user-generated courses and the proliferation of AI content on the app narrowed it scope to beginner vocabulary only, less individual control of the learning experience, and a lot more flashiness. I miss the original version of the app and after paying for a lifetime membership, it feels like a horrid bait-and-switch.

Overall memrise is fantastic learning software. The pacing is good, they give you literal translations which really helps you understand the language. They also have recordings of locals speaking so you can develop an ear for the language. The only thing I dislike are how long the "speed courses" can be. They start out at 10 questions, which is fine, but the last one I did was still going at 50. You're allowed 3 wrong, and then you fail the session, losing your progress, not a good use of time
