MapUncover turns the places you explore into a personal fog-of-war map.
Walk a different street, cycle across town, or travel farther from home. As MapUncover records your route, the fog clears, and your map becomes a visual history of where you have been.
MapUncover began as a research project on gamified map exploration, published at CHI 2023.
Explore your way
• Reveal map tiles by visiting them in real life
• Keep recording while the screen is off, with controls to pause tracking or automatically pause at higher speeds
• Search for landmarks, museums, parks, viewpoints, stations, and other places nearby
• Follow anonymous hints near the edge of explored areas, then reveal the place by reaching it
• Choose map and fog styles, colours, terrain, and exploration heatmaps
Build a world of your own
• Turn visited countries into animated islands in Voyage
• Collect country passports and stamps as you discover places
• Replay past journeys and see how your explored world has grown
• Earn coins, levels, streaks, and achievements through exploration
• Join optional leaderboards and compare progress with friends
Bring your history with you
Import trips from GPX, KML, KMZ, GeoJSON, and Google Timeline files.
Keep control of your data
Your exploration history is stored on your device by default. Accounts, leaderboards, analytics, sharing, and cloud backups are optional. Backups are encrypted with a passphrase you choose. You can also export your data whenever you want.
