Nav Rules is a COLREGS quiz and boat exam trainer for the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. Identify vessels from their navigation lights at night, work out who gives way, and drill the sound signals until the rules of the road come naturally.
WHAT'S INSIDE
• 150 practice questions: 75 on navigation lights, 45 on the rules themselves and 30 give-way encounter scenarios.
• Light questions show a night-sea diagram of the vessel with its masthead, side, stern and all-round lights, as seen from ahead, port, starboard or astern.
• After every answer you see whether you got it right, the governing rule number and a short explanation.
• A running score keeps count, and the deck reshuffles once you reach the last card.
EXAM MODE
• 20 questions drawn without repeats, 15 minutes on the clock, pass mark 72%.
• No hints while the exam is running; when the time runs out, the exam is submitted automatically.
• The score screen lists each mistake, including questions left unanswered when time ran out, with your answer, the correct answer, the rule and the explanation.
• Missed questions go onto a review list. Retry just those, and every one you get right in a later exam is cleared.
• Your number of attempts and your highest score are kept between sessions.
GIVE-WAY OR STAND-ON
Choose your vessel and the other vessel: power-driven, sailing, fishing, restricted in ability to manoeuvre, or not under command. Then pick head-on, crossing or overtaking and, where it matters, which side the other vessel is on or whether you are overtaking or being overtaken. For two sailing vessels, set your wind side, whether she is on the same or the opposite tack and, on the same tack, whether you are to windward or leeward. The result shows GIVE WAY or STAND ON together with the rule number and the reason behind it.
LIGHTS REFERENCE
• Ten light patterns: power-driven, sailing, trawling, fishing, not under command, restricted in ability to manoeuvre, constrained by her draught, towing, at anchor and aground. Each is drawn as a diagram with a memory aid such as "red over red, the captain is dead".
• Five key rules of the road in plain words: look-out, safe speed, overtaking, head-on and crossing.
• Sound signal tables for Rule 34 manoeuvring and warning signals and Rule 35 signals in restricted visibility, plus the Rule 32 blast lengths.
TOPICS IN THE RULES QUESTIONS
Look-out, safe speed, risk of collision, narrow channels, traffic separation schemes, conduct in restricted visibility, day shapes, sound signals and distress signals.
WHO IT IS FOR
Students preparing for a boating license or skipper exam, sailing school students, and boaters who want a quick refresher before a night passage.
GOOD TO KNOW
The encounter tool covers the standard Rule 12–18 situations; it does not model narrow channels, traffic separation schemes or restricted visibility. Tap "?" at the top of the screen whenever you want a reminder of how the app works.
Nav Rules is a study aid, not a navigation instrument. Always consult the official COLREGS text, follow your local regulations and use good seamanship.
