I'm Martyn Paterson, and competitive sport has shaped the majority of my life, first as an athlete, and since 2012, as a coach. I've worked with everyday gym-goers, people focused on improving body composition, and, most recently, competitive endurance athletes. My focus has now shifted heavily into HYROX, both as a competitor and as a coach.
My sporting background spans more than 20 years. My first love was American Flag Football, where I represented Scotland and Great Britain internationally, being voted Most Valuable Player at the European Championships in 2009 and 2011. I then moved into competitive athletics, again competing internationally and winning multiple Scottish titles, with personal bests of 48 seconds for the 400m and 1:52 for the 800m, achieved at just 18.
Alongside competing, I've always been deeply invested in whatever arena I was training in, constantly developing my knowledge to find every possible edge. I qualified in the fitness industry in 2011, and while working a full-time job, I dedicated myself to coaching face-to-face on the gym floor, learning first-hand how people train and move, as well as coaching online.
For several years, I immersed myself in physique development and weight training. In 2025, I completed my first HYROX and was hooked immediately, I loved how it combined endurance and strength. Over the past year, I've competed in more than 10 races and collected multiple podiums, taking my solo time from 1:03 down to 56:59. Along the way I've made mistakes and learned a great deal, turning them into lessons that now shape how I coach athletes for the sport. I've also continued improving my own running, bringing my 5km down to 15:45 and my 10km down to 33:42 in the last few months.
I still love competing and always strive to be the best possible version of myself, but I have an equal passion for coaching, for helping others, and for watching them achieve results they never thought possible. Over the past year, I've coached numerous athletes to drastically improve their personal bests, built on smart, progressive programmes and the confidence to pace their races properly on race day.
I firmly believe successful HYROX performance comes down to executing three fundamentals well:
Building a strong aerobic base, the foundation that underpins your potential in this sport. Without a strong engine, even the fastest, strongest athlete won't reach their potential on race day.
Building a tolerable, sustainable approach to training. HYROX is predominantly raced around your anaerobic threshold, and training well above this doesn't deliver the same benefits as training at the right intensity, more and harder doesn't always mean better. My programmes are built specifically around the athletes I work with: progressive, challenging, and sustainable, so long-term improvement occurs rather than chasing short-term wins.
Providing athletes with correct technical guidance to move efficiently across all eight stations plus the running. Every opportunity to minimise fatigue and preserve energy matters for race-day performance, moving through the race in a controlled, efficient manner is the difference between performing at your best and blowing up early.
My coaching is completely tailored to the athletes I work with. I take lifestyle factors, training experience, and daily commitments into account to ensure every aspect of your training and performance can be maximised. My programmes are built to drive performance in the right direction, not to chase random workouts.
My coaching style suits athletes who want to learn how to train and compete in HYROX the right way, benefiting performance now while building the tools for long-term improvement. If you want to train consistently, develop your aerobic base, movement efficiency, and strength endurance, and learn to execute the race properly rather than going in blind, take a look at my programmes below, and feel free to get in touch to see how I can help.
