Alberich – Historical ENIGMA M4 Simulator
Discover Alberich, the authentic simulation of the legendary Enigma M4 of the German Navy (from 1942 onwards). This reciprocal four-rotor cipher machine lets you encrypt and decrypt texts just like the historical machines – using the same settings. Perfect for anyone interested in cryptography, history, or real privacy.

Important settings:
- Rotor position: Select the thin rotor (Beta or Gamma) plus three normal rotors (I–VIII). Example: B241 = Beta + II + IV + I
- Ring position: Shifts the internal wiring of each rotor. As a 4-letter code (e.g., AAAV)
- Message key (default position): The initial position of the rotors (4-letter code, e.g., VJNA). This is selected anew for each message.
- Plugboard: Swaps letters in pairs (e.g., AT BL DF). Historically, usually 10 pairs.
- Reflector (FM): Bruno (FM-b) or Caesar (FM-c). With FM-D (Dora), you can even configure the wiring yourself.
How to operate Alberich:
1. Configure settings: Select rotors, ring position, message key, and plugboard. Use "Standard" for typical historical M4 settings or "Random" for new configurations.
2. Encrypt: Type or paste your plaintext at the top. The output immediately displays the encrypted result in convenient groups of four.
3. Decrypt: Paste the encrypted text – using the same settings, you will get the original text back.
4. Share: Copy the result or share it directly via messenger or email.
The reels spin live in the visualization – you'll see the right reel rotate with each letter.
Practical Use:
With Alberich, you protect sensitive information when exchanging messages with friends, family, or colleagues. Whether for private messages, business arrangements, or just for fun – the app brings historical cryptography to life and makes it usable. Agree on the settings beforehand via a secure channel and then chat securely.
Important Notes:
- Only uppercase letters A–Z (automatic conversion)
- No special characters, punctuation marks, or numbers (please spell out numbers)
- Spaces are preserved
- For maximum security: Never use the same settings twice
