Alberich – Modern Enigma Encryption | M4 & Modern V3
Alberich combines a historically oriented Enigma M4 simulation with Alberich’s own Modern V3 procedure (optionally hardened: an independent full key per time slot) and makes strong encryption practical for everyday use.
Ideal for anyone who values real privacy – cryptography enthusiasts, history buffs, or people who simply want to communicate securely. Generate, view and print monthly key sheets in the app. Courier mode keeps the crypto on an offline device – the online phone sees only ciphertext.
Courier mode – offline computes, online carries
Courier separates encryption from the messenger. On the offline device, courier stays off: that is where the key sheet lives and the machine runs. On the everyday online phone, switch courier on: QR and letters only, no plaintext, no sheet.
A content scan on the communications device (client-side scanning) then sees neither plaintext nor the daily key. The finished ciphertext moves as a single QR between the two devices.

Create unique monthly key sheets in setup – same algorithm as the web app. View the monthly table, copy it as text, or print it.
Two sheet kinds in Modern V3:
• Daily key: one full key per calendar day. Share via JSON or still-image QR.
• V3 hardened: an independent full key per time slot (24 hours, 4 hours or 1 hour; default 4 hours). Alberich key time is UTC+1 (CET) all year, with no daylight saving. The clock selects the stored key; it does not derive one. Share via live QR or a .alb3cb2 file – not as a still-image QR. The camera reads the same live QR as the web app.
Communicate encrypted all month without constantly agreeing on new settings.
Emergency wipe deletes every sheet on the device. Networks stay.
Modern Mode – everyday text, automatic, non-involutory
Modern is one procedure. The reflector is gone. Each day has its own 26-letter end rotor (non-involutory) and visible filler notches on the sheet (5, 7 or 9). The telegram carries the stamp ALBV, an eight-letter message ID and a 20-letter check group at the end (HMAC, not a second message key). Without the full telegram there is no plaintext.
• Non-involutory: running the text through twice does not return the plaintext. The app inverts automatically on decrypt.
• Base-26 encoding: any text (including spaces, punctuation and numbers) maps into the 26-letter space.
• Automatic message key: you maintain the daily key from the sheet. The app creates the message key.
When creating a sheet, Modern always uses free permutation. Mix and Bruno/Caesar only belong to the Traditional path (historic reflectors).
How to use Modern Mode:
Load a key sheet or set the daily key – the message key is set automatically.
Enter any text (Base-26 handles the rest).
Encrypt or decrypt – inversion is handled by the app.
Share the result.
Important notes:
• Traditional Mode: Uppercase A–Z only. No special characters, punctuation or digits.
• Modern Mode: Full text input thanks to Base-26.
• For maximum security: Never reuse the same settings.
