About this game

A game I made
For a certain kind of person

To hurt them.

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a punishing climbing game, a homage to Jazzuo's 2002 B-Game classic 'Sexy Hiking'. You move the hammer with the mouse, and that's all there is. With practice, you'll be able to jump, swing, climb and fly. Great mysteries and a wonderful reward await the master hikers who reach the top of the mountain.

To quote Jazzuo himself: "The hiking action is very similar to way you would do it in real life, remember that and you will do well".

• Climb up an enormous mountain with nothing but a hammer and a pot.
• Listen as I make philosophical observations about the problem at hand.
• Between 2 and ∞ hours of agonizing gameplay, depending. The median time to finish for my playtesters was 5 hours, but the mean was closer to ∞.
• Lose all your progress, over and over.
• Feel new types of frustration you didn't know you were capable of.
I made a game for a certain kind of person. To hurt them.

Extremely frustrating, and it's part of the charm of this game. One wrong move can send you right back to the start, and it'll take a lot of practise to make any progress in some sections. The controls could be better. They're alright when you're wildly swinging around, but when making more delicate movements they can be janky. Although the game is supposed to be frustrating, the janky controls are something that's not the player's fault. Graphics are alright, commentary is delightful.

The song bird of a generation. It's deeply upsetting to see so many people complaining about how hard the game is. The narrator is anything but unreliable. The game is designed to make you throw your phone through a wall. It's up to the player to decide when. Beautiful challenges and incredible dialogue, in a time when games are designed to appease the player. Finally a game that's designed to make them work. I'd be remised if I didn't say, iridescent.

It's hard. I won't blame the controls. But I will recommend others use a thumb sleeve. If you're sweaty, the responsiveness of controls is garbage. The same is true for any mobile game. Only this game punishes you much harder for it. So, yes. It's frustrating. It hurts. I nearly cried several times. The devils chimney made me wanna die only to discover it gets so much worse. So if you want to learn to control your frustration, download this now. And Devs, please port pogostuck to android next!
