📖 The Book of Virtues and Opposites by Al-Jahiz 📖

By Abu Uthman Amr ibn Bahr Mahbub al-Kinani al-Laythi al-Basri, known as Al-Jahiz

Enjoy reading Al-Jahiz's Book of Virtues and Opposites with the best offline app for books and stories, and many other features.

With his distinctive style of rich, complex, yet easy-to-understand linguistic structures, Al-Jahiz combines the virtues and flaws of things in this book. He mentions social customs and human traits, such as intelligence, cunning, eloquence, and foolishness, as well as feelings such as patriotism, and other traits, actions, and indications that can carry both good and evil. The reader will find all of this in the narrative style unique to Al-Jahiz. His method of dividing the book set a new style that later writers followed. It is thus a book that contains distinguished linguistic creativity, historical anecdotes, imaginative anecdotes, and social situations presented in the finest possible light, reflecting on the era in which the Arab genius Al-Jahiz lived.

The idea of the book imposed its style on the author, as it consists of narrative excerpts from ancient and modern events, which Al-Jahiz used and crafted in a calm style rich in vocabulary and structures to complement the wisdom and morals that fill the excerpts. The use of the concept of a thing and its opposite added a sense of ease and simplicity to the book, both because it made the book's outlines clear and because it was a different concept from what readers were accustomed to in literature and other books.

The book contains approximately 36 pairs of virtues and opposites (i.e., 72 topics), in addition to four topics that violate the book's rule of neither virtue nor vice! Furthermore, there are four virtues without opposites.

Author:
Abu Uthman Amr ibn Bahr ibn Mahbub ibn Fazarah al-Laythi al-Kinani al-Basri (159 AH-255 AH) was an Arab writer who was one of the leading figures in literature during the Abbasid era. His significant works are considered a fundamental component of Arab culture. He was born in Basra in 159 AH, according to some historians. He was called al-Jahiz due to his bulging eyes. He also worked as a camel driver for Amr ibn Qala' al-Kinani. Among his attributes were his sharp intelligence, endurance, rigor, and a gifted orator, as well as his intuition and sound judgment. He also had his own unique styles, doctrines, and opinions in literature and language, and he established a method of composition that bears his name. He was therefore considered a role model and leader among poets of that era, just as Ibn al-Muqaffa was their leader in the first era.

❇️ Some reviews of Al-Jahiz's book "Al-Mahasin wal-Idad" ❇️

- One of the beauties of Al-Jahiz's books is that they are distinguished by their rich language, and what adds to its beauty is the excellent coordination and arrangement. He included in this book whatever he wished to include of the virtues and opposites of a thing, depicting people's morals, characteristics, apparent differences, social customs, and various disputes of the era in which he lived, in a rhythmic, sequential style par excellence, as if I were reading a poem by
Khulud Abd al-Rahman

- A journey of linguistic richness, living among palaces, princes, and concubines, and a refutation of attributes, actions, and forms, with their virtues and vices, and a close refutation of them.
In all the qualities and their opposites included in this book, al-Jahiz cited poetry, proverbs, wisdom, verses, hadiths, and biographies as much as he could to support his idea and clarify his objectives. What the reader can deduce from the book is the corruption of life in palaces and among princes. From the stories presented, it becomes clear how far princes and rulers have degenerated, and to what extent people have abandoned religion and indulged in the distractions of life, thus corrupting their condition and religion.
Yomna Habashy

- One of the most beautiful books of literature. How could it not be, when its author, al-Jahiz, is renowned in the world of literature, eloquence, and rhetoric. Ibn al-Amid said of him: "The books of al-Jahiz teach reason first and literature second." This book is a beautiful literary excursion between the beauties of things and their opposites.
Shorouk al-Quwai'i

- A collection of Arab tales on various matters, beginning with books and ending with death. A wonderful book that I have adopted as a companion in solitude.
Abdelrahman Kasem

- An enjoyable and linguistically rich book. It contains poetry, stories, and proverbs. The most beautiful thing about Al-Sa'ir is that it is made more beautiful by Al-Jahiz's narration, his skill, and his excellent style.
