Al-Muqalliq. A book compiled by Imam Ibn al-Jawzi, it contains frightening hadiths, warnings of evil deeds, descriptions of punishments, and disturbing stories that disturb the tranquil, unsettle the still, soften the hard heart, bring tears to the eyes, and awaken the lazy and retired.
He said in the introduction to the book: I have seen that storytellers have left out what is appropriate to mention in gatherings of intimidation and terror, and have taken to false embellishments. If they mention a hadith, it is most likely a lie. If it is authentic, most likely they add to it what is not from it. Their concern is the splendor of the gathering, however it happens. So the listeners leave without having been forbidden from a sin, and their hearts are not humble. If the storyteller succeeds, he says to them: God’s mercy is vast, and he does not mention that He is severe in punishment. It is well known that the preacher is a physician for the diseases of sin and a reformer of the heart's temperaments. If he sees someone who has despaired of his desires or is secure from his fear, he combats diseases with their opposites. I have seen security, a lack of fear, and the coexistence of greed as diseases that have taken hold of souls. I knew that no combination of medications can intimidate. For if the tranquilizer is told something that induces tranquility, it is like a cold that gives coolness. So, in this book, I have gathered frightening hadiths, warnings of evil, descriptions of punishments, and disturbing tales that disturb the tranquil, unsettle the tranquil, soften the hardened heart, bring tears to the eyes, and awaken the lazy and retired. And Allah is the Grantor of success.

Ibn al-Jawzi, Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qurashi al-Taymi al-Bakri, was a Hanbali jurist, hadith scholar, historian, and theologian (510 AH/1116 CE - 12 Ramadan 597 AH). - Reality checks are very important. I believe it is essential to remind ourselves of death and its punishments to maintain some balance in our lives.

- "Every breath we take brings us closer to death. This time we spend in this world is short, our confinement in the grave is long, and the punishment for following our desires is severe... Whenever you feel your faith is diminishing, just read this. The book could not be more true than its title."

- Many motivational talks, lectures, and hadiths lead us to believe that we Muslims will somehow be forgiven in the end and thus be allowed to enter Paradise. But we tend to forget the terrible experiences and severe punishments that Allah Almighty warned us about in the Holy Quran, and as a result Therefore, many of us become complacent about our actions, oblivious to the fact that we must remain vigilant about our sins. We sinners are often deceived by the misconceptions of these motivational verses from the Quran and Hadiths, relying on Allah's forgiveness on the Day of Judgment. Thus, undeterred by the imminent punishments, we continue to commit sins, hoping that Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, will forgive us.
So, it is not the hope of Paradise that prevents us from disobeying our Lord. Rather, it is the fear of Hellfire that deters us from sinning when we sincerely fear it. Ibn al-Jawzi, may Allah have mercy on him, attempted to portray the entire scenario in this book. He also explained why we must carry the precise mixture of hope and fear in our hearts to attain Allah's pleasure and mercy in this world and the Hereafter.

- Whoever is truly ashamed of Allah, let him guard his head and what it grasps, let him guard his stomach and what it desires, let him remember death and calamities, and whoever desires the Hereafter, let him abandon the adornments of this world. Whoever does all of this is the one who... He is truly ashamed of God.

As God has told us, death is indeed the destroyer of all pleasures. I am grateful that you guided me to pick this up at a bookstore. It puts things into perspective. Time and again, we forget the afterlife, on a daily basis. This is a book I want to remember until my last breath.
