The Thousand Character Classic (千字文, Cheonjamun) is a classical primer built from 1,000 characters that never repeat, arranged into 250 four-character stanzas. This app takes you through all of them, in order, from the first stanza to the last.
■ Read
All 250 stanzas in traditional forms, each with its reading and meaning. Tap into a stanza to see every character with its English gloss, pinyin, stroke count, Korean reading, and Japanese on/kun readings. Choose Korean, English or Japanese for the reading language, or follow your device setting.
■ Daily practice
Learn one new stanza, review up to eight characters that have come due, then recite the stanza you just learned from memory. Review intervals stretch from four hours to 120 days based on how you answer, so settled characters come back less often and shaky ones return sooner.
■ Tracing
A paper-toned cell with a traditional guide grid and a faint model character. Trace the strokes with a finger or stylus — four characters of a stanza side by side, or one character enlarged.
■ Progress
Stanzas introduced and characters mastered, counted as you go. Each character shows one of four stages: unseen, learning, familiar, mastered.
■ Chunja Pro
A one-time purchase, not a subscription.
· Test mode — random questions drawn from all 1,000 characters, independent of your progress.
· Mistakes notebook — keeps what you missed and drops it once you get it right.
Reading all 250 stanzas, spaced-repetition review and tracing are free and stay free.
■ Sources
The text and Korean glosses follow Wikisource's translation of the Thousand Character Classic (public domain). Per-character definitions, pinyin, stroke counts and Japanese readings come from the Unicode Han Database (Unihan); Korean hun readings come from Wiktionary. Readings we could not verify were left blank rather than guessed.
