A 8-character password using letters and digits has about 2.8 trillion combinations — fast hardware cracks it in hours. A 16-character password has over 47 quadrillion combinations — the same hardware takes thousands of years. Length is the single most effective lever, more than adding symbols to a short password. The crack-time estimate in this app shows this in plain language as you drag the slider: adding four characters typically moves the estimate from "days" to "centuries."
