Before purchasing I called the company to see if they I would be able to fully control device from "either" my phone or my PC using a web browser. I was assured that I could. However upon receipt of unit: a phone IS REQUIRED to perform the initial setup. a phone IS REQUIRED to change your password a phone IS REQUIRED to change MANY of the features on the product "it is really hit or miss" what is supported from PC web application. Company does not see at all concerned that MANY functions are PHONE only, company is unwilling to update the web interface to fully support using a PC web browser.
The app is not user friendly. It's difficult to navigate between the screens you need. The Smart features interfere with watering when they shouldn't, so I shut them all off and manually skip days when I need to. I have low water plants on 4 different schedules, so I adjust the schedules based on weather/seasonal changes. The schedules never adjust correctly, so I always have to play with the date to get the watering to start on the day I want. It's a bit of a pain, especially if you manually skip days due to rain and have a watering schedule that's every 3 days or something more complicated.
The Rachio app is really well designed. It's intuitive and easy-to-use. It has a snappy interface that allows quick actions and dashboard images which deliver information at a glance. You can also add permissions via the app, which then sends an email to the user you want to grant access to. In my case, I wanted my wife to be able to access the irrigation controller as well. Finally, it has several advanced features like reducing water hammer and smart scheduling. Did I mention it hasn't lost Wi-Fi connection once despite it being in our garage while the Netgear R8500 is in the basement? No complaints from us. Job well done.
It's a lot better than a conventional controller, but it's not that "smart" either. Manual adjustments are necessary to avoid wasting huge amounts of water. And the app's design is not that great.
The "smart cycle" isn't very smart...I don't know where it gets it's forecast information but it's terrible. I basically have to remember to watch/check the weather every night and apply manual skips when rain is forecasted. Same with temps. Unusually low temps/cloudy in August? Whatever, why pay attention to that? This thing has run a full cycle 3x now just hours before getting 2in of rain!!! Like this AM. So far, this controller has cost me more $$$ in water than the Pro-C. It's basically only good for remote start/stop/delays b/c I can't trust it to be smart. Maybe they'll improve it, who knows, but the touted water savings and set-n-forget capability seems to be mutually exclusive at this point.
When watering manually, the app adds 1 minute to the selected time. So if 2 minutes is desired and displayed, when run is selected the app then displays 3 minutes and runs for 3 minutes instead of 2. Uninstalled, restarted, and reinstalled, but no help.
Fix for large number of devices and remote control usage.
