About this app

Every browser translates the text on a page. Ascent also translates the text inside the pictures.

A menu photographed on a wall. A station sign. The ingredients on a packet. A screenshot of an error message. Ordinary translation stops at the page text and leaves all of it in a language you can't read. Ascent finds the writing inside the images too, works out the lines and columns, and paints the translation back exactly where the original was — so a price list still reads as a price list.

What Ascent can read

How it works

1. Open any page and tap translate.
2. Ascent scans the images for characters, in any orientation, including vertical and right-to-left scripts.
3. The translation appears in place, at the same size and position. Tap and hold any image to see the original again.

About your privacy

There is no account and nothing to sign up for. Your history, bookmarks, tabs, passwords and cookies stay on your phone. We run no sync service, so there is no server of ours holding your browsing and no copy we could hand over if asked.

Translation works on request. When you tap translate, the text and images on that page are sent to be translated and returned. Nothing is sent before you ask, and Ascent never scans pages in the background.

Ascent is free because it carries ads. Our advertising partner receives your device's advertising identifier and approximate location — never your history, your searches, or anything you translate. You can switch off personalised ads at any time in Settings and keep using every feature.

Permissions

Storage — to save your downloads and to open an image you choose to translate. Ascent reads only the file you pick.
