About this app

Background Remover cuts the subject out of a photo and leaves a transparent background behind it. All of it happens on your phone.

ANY SUBJECT, NOT ONLY PEOPLE
Products, pets, food, plants and objects work as well as portraits. Holes are handled too: the gap through a mug handle, or between an arm and a body, comes out transparent instead of filled in.

MANY PHOTOS AT ONCE
Pick a whole batch and each photo is cut out in turn, with the progress of every one on screen. Save the lot in a single step. Anything that could not be done is marked rather than quietly skipped.

TIDY THE EDGES BY HAND
No automatic cutout is right every time, usually where the subject meets a background of a similar colour. Erase takes parts out and Restore brings them back, with an adjustable brush size and edge softness. Pinch to zoom in for the fiddly parts. Undo and redo cover every stroke, and holding the compare button shows the original underneath.

A REAL TRANSPARENT PNG
Save as PNG or WebP and the transparency is genuinely there, ready to drop into a document, a design or a shop listing. There is an exact 512 by 512 sticker size for WhatsApp and Telegram, and 2048 or 1024 pixel sizes for when the full photo is more than you need. The cutout is made at the full resolution of your original, not at a preview size.

PUT SOMETHING ELSE BEHIND IT
Leave the background transparent, fill it with a colour for a product shot or an ID photo, or blur the original so the subject stands out while its setting is still there. Once there is a solid background behind it, JPG becomes available as well.

WHAT IT DOES NOT DO
Background Remover asks for no Android permissions at all, and has no internet access, so nothing you cut out is able to leave your phone. There is no account to create, no advertising, and no watermark on anything you save. You choose photos with Android's own picker, which means the app only ever sees the ones you picked. Your original photo is never changed; a cutout is saved as a new file in a Background Remover album in your gallery.

FIRST RUN
Part of the cutout model is supplied by Google Play services and may be fetched the first time you open the app. Google Play services does that, not this app, and it carries none of your photos. Everything works offline once it is there.
