About this app

Calculate the environmental footprint of a recipe from its ingredients. It also includes a selection of sustainable recipes.

The food sector is one of the most impacting on the planet. From the food “highways” that allow us to consume lentils produced in Canada to the tons of food that are wasted every year, food is a good part of our personal ecological footprint.

To learn how to reduce your ecological footprint of food and to be a more conscious consumer, from Fundación Vida Sostenible (www.vidasostenible.org) we have developed this app.

With ComidApprove you will be able to measure the impact that the food you consume have on the planet, in terms of its Carbon Footprint, Water Footprint and Use of Resources. You just have to choose the foods you want to check, their quantity, their origin and the way of cooking. The result, an approximate measure, is the sum of the impact produced not only on food production but also on transport and cooking. It also offers a wide cookbook with ideas that allow you to reduce your waste as well as learn what is behind some foods.

In order to obtain these calculations, we have based ourselves on the Environmental Footprint methodology of the European Commission, defined in Recommendation EU 2013/179 / EU. In this first phase many foods can be consulted, but we will add new ones depending on their availability.

The environmental impact data has been calculated using the Air.e LCA Life Cycle Analysis software, performing its own analyzes and using data from widely recognized sources internationally such as ecoinvent®, Agri-footprint® and ELCD among others. In some cases, data from the Water Footprint Network have been used. The impacts have been calculated according to the methods recommended by Model EF (3.0) for PEF and OEF.
