Critica is an independent annotated reader for the Quran and selected Islamic source and interpretive traditions. You read the passage, then the critical scholarship on it, with the citation sitting next to the claim.
FIVE LIBRARIES
The Quran library is complete. The other four are selective.
Quran. All 114 surahs, with 167 annotated sections and 209 issue annotations.
Hadith. Seven collections, with 46 sections and 68 issue annotations: the six Sunni books and the Twelver Shia Al-Kafi.
Sira. Sixteen event clusters, with 28 sections and 39 issue annotations, from Muhammad's birth in Mecca to his farewell sermon and death.
Fiqh. Thirteen topics, with 26 sections and 35 issue annotations, across the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools and Twelver Ja'fari jurisprudence.
Tafsir. Six classical commentaries, with 15 sections and 15 issue annotations, by al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, al-Qurtubi, al-Razi, al-Tabarsi and al-Zamakhshari.
READING AND SEARCH
You see a source locator on every section, naming the passage under discussion. When a section cites the Quran, expand the cited ayah in Uthmani Arabic and switch between the Yusuf Ali and Pickthall English translations. You get all 6,236 ayahs in the download. Reading, search and filtering run on the device. A source link, a support page or the rating page opens in the browser you choose.
ANNOTATIONS AND SOURCES
The annotations are editorial analysis written from a secular critical perspective. They do not report a scholarly consensus and they are not legal advice. Historians and jurists contest much of this material, so read the cited source and compare other readings before you draw a conclusion.
PRICE
Al-Fatiha and Al-Baqara are free, along with one entry in each of the other four libraries. One optional purchase opens the remaining 150 entries. You pay once through Google Play, and Critica has no subscription and no account.
CONTENT NOTE
Critica discusses violence, sexual violence, slavery, child marriage, discrimination, corporal punishment and execution as the historical and religious texts record them. The discussion is text, with no images or audio, and it is written for adult readers.
