WHY FIRESIDE

Most classic-game apps pick one rule set and stick to it. Fireside doesn't: before the deal, you choose the house rules — whether the jack of diamonds counts in Hearts, how many times you may turn the stock in Klondike, how a canasta is built — in plain language, not buried in a settings menu. Four difficulty levels are offered on every game with an opponent, and each one is described by what it actually does, not just labeled Easy or Hard.

Klondike, Hearts, Checkers and Sudoku are free forever, at every difficulty. The other seventeen — including regional favorites other apps skip, like Sheepshead, Pinochle and Hand and Foot — unlock with a subscription or a one-time purchase.

Fireside has no server. There is no account to create and nothing about how you play is ever uploaded. The only time the app touches the network at all is to check a purchase with Google Play.
