Vesta is for everyone who wants to lose weight or eat healthier without counting calories – and for anyone for whom food is also a health concern: allergies, intolerances, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, gout, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, pregnancy, or regular medication.
HOW IT WORKS
You take a photo of your food. Vesta recognizes the dish, ingredients, and portion size and estimates the calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, sugar, and sodium – for the portion on your plate, not per 100 grams. The scanner doesn't need scales, barcodes, or database searches. For ambiguous images, Vesta asks for clarification instead of guessing.
WHAT DISTINGUISHES VESTA FROM A CALORIE COUNTER
With every complete scan, a personal check is also performed – depending on the information in your profile:
- Allergy check for allergies and food intolerances. This cannot be deactivated and is active in all functions. It also identifies hidden sources: soy sauce usually contains wheat and therefore gluten, broth often contains celery, and breading almost always contains wheat. If something is found, Vesta suggests a substitute—for example, tamari instead of soy sauce—instead of discarding the recipe.
- Blood pressure check. From 800 mg of sodium per serving (around 2 g of salt), the rating is "Critical"; between 500 and 800 mg, it's "Consider."
- Diabetes check. Critical from 25 g of sugar or 90 g of carbohydrates per serving. Fructose from fruit and smoothies is included.
- Cholesterol check. Critical from 8 g of saturated fatty acids per serving.
- Also includes a gout check, gluten check, irritable bowel syndrome check, and pregnancy check.
- Medication check for known interactions: grapefruit and statins, vitamin K and anticoagulants, milk and tetracyclines, licorice and blood pressure medication.
Each rating has four levels: Unremarkable, Noteworthy, Critical, or Not Rated. For the allergy, gluten, and pregnancy checks, Vesta never gives a "green" rating if it's unsure.
