Lexis turns the dictionary around: you are shown a definition and have to find the word it defines.
"A small domesticated carnivorous mammal with soft fur" → CAT.
Some are easy. Some will sit on the tip of your tongue for a while.
ONE WORD A DAY — Every day brings a new word, the same for everyone. Mondays are gentle; by Sunday the words get properly obscure. Solve it to keep your daily streak alive.
PRACTICE — Thousands of words at the difficulty you choose – easy, medium, hard, or anything goes – for as long as you like.
STREAK — No hints and three guesses a word. Words get harder the longer you last. One miss ends the run. How far can you go?
FAIR PLAY
• Guess a synonym and Lexis tells you so, instead of just marking you wrong. "SOFA is a synonym, but we're looking for a different word."
• Plurals and simple word forms count as correct.
• Definitions never contain the answer or a form of it.
• Stuck? After three wrong guesses you can reveal the first letter, then the letter count, then a second sense of the word.
A DICTIONARY, NOT A CHAT BUBBLE — Each puzzle is set like a dictionary entry on a dark page: the definition large in a classic serif, the part of speech in small caps. Get it right and the headword slots into place above it.
WORKS OFFLINE — The whole word list is on your phone. No account, no sign-in, no data collected by the game. Definitions come from Princeton's WordNet, filtered down to common English words with fair, self-contained glosses.
Lexis is free and supported by ads. Watching an optional short video unlocks a hint early.
You get the definition. Find the word. One puzzle a day, plus endless practice.
