It features key campaigns such as suppressing the Yellow Turban Rebellion, the coalition against Dong Zhuo, defeating Lü Bu, crushing Yuan Shu, the Battle of Guandu, the epic clash at Red Cliffs, and the struggle for Hanzhong. In the second half of the game, the choices you make can change Cao Cao’s ultimate fate.
The game offers two major routes:
Historical Route: Follow the orthodox history. After Liu Bei is defeated, seize the opportunity to march on Shu and Wu and ultimately unify the realm.
Mythic/Fantasy Route: Zhuge Liang is controlled by a Demon King and plots against Liu Bei, joining Eastern Wu to fight Cao Cao. In the end, Cao Cao triumphs and unites the realm. In the mythic ending, you can recruit the legendary general Guan Yu, famed throughout the Three Kingdoms.
If you look closer, the historical ending can further branch into two outcomes: “Unify and proclaim yourself Emperor” and “Unify without proclaiming yourself Emperor.”
Cao Cao’s journey spans the late Han dynasty and the early Three Kingdoms era. A full cast of iconic figures appears—Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, Lü Bu, Liu Bei and his sworn brothers, Zhuge Liang, Zhao Yun, Sun Jian, Sun Ce, Sun Quan, and many more—each standing in Cao Cao’s way as he rises to dominate China. Meanwhile, Cao Cao’s own ranks are packed with talent, including Xiahou Dun, Xiahou Yuan, Xun Yu, Xun You, Sima Yi, Guo Jia, Xu Chu, and Dian Wei.
